In response to recent public discussion regarding the bus e-ticketing system, the Ministry for Communications wishes to clarify the context of the statements shared by the Minister last week on the margins of Parliament.
The Minister for Communications has emphasised the Ministry's commitment to ensuring all systems and processes and governance mechanisms are continuously monitored and reviewed. This is a standard and necessary practice aimed at consistently providing better and more efficient services to the Fijian people. The focus is a forward-looking exercise designed to identify areas for enhancement and to ensure the upgraded system meets the evolving needs of the public.
The Ministry acknowledges the good and necessary work undertaken previously, particularly under the leadership of the former Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Manoa Kamikamica. The establishment of the multistakeholder e-ticketing committee was a vital step in the new system's development, and this does not take away from those foundational efforts. Instead, the intention of the Minister's comments last week seeks to build upon them, and the Minister looks forward to convening the next meeting of the E-ticketing committee and to meet with all the members and not only to discuss on the progress but to address and mitigate emerging challenges of this important national initiative.
Since the beginning of the year, Vodafone, under the Committee's oversight, has been rolling out the new e-Ticketing system, replacing the previous version launched in 2017 that had reached the end of its technical support. To date, over 486,000 new cards have been issued, and the system has recorded more than 22.5 million taps, with new digital features such as the e-Transport mobile app already improving user convenience. Work is in progress to enhance top-up accessibility through the inclusion of Digicel's myCash and other interested partners, strengthen system reliability, upcoming introduction of QR Pay, and the planned addition of scheme cards allowing commuters to make payments directly from their smartphones.
The Hon. Minister reiterates that "We are focused on learning lessons from the operation so far and are always working on improvements. The ultimate objective is to ensure the e-ticketing system serves the public in the most effective, reliable, and user-friendly way possible. This is about iterative progress for the ultimate benefit of our people."
