Prepare a Go Bag to Stay Ready for Emergencies

An emergency bag, or 'go bag,' is a pre-packed bag that contains essential supplies to help individuals be prepared during emergencies. These bags are designed to support you for at least 72 hours so that you can evacuate safely and quickly.

Should the need for evacuation occur, make quick departure by preparing a go bag. Once you take a look at the basic items consider what unique needs your family might have, such as supplies for pets or seniors.

  • One gallon of water per person per day for several days for drinking and sanitation.
  • At least a several-day supply of non-perishable food.
  • Flashlight, battery-powered or hand crank radio and extra batteries.
  • First-aid kit, dust mask and whistle to signal for help.
  • Cell phone with chargers, a backup battery, and local maps.
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities.
  • Plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter in place if necessary.
  • Manual can opener for food.
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags with plastic ties for personal sanitation.
  • Prescription and non-prescription medications and prescription eyeglasses.

Additionally, below are some essentials to consider:

1. Medication

Pack essential medical supplies like anti-allergy pills, paracetamol, prescription medications, and any other drugs you or your family take regularly. Include extras for a few days, as access to pharmacies might be limited.

2. Disposable Cutlery

Disposable cutlery makes eating more convenient when washing utensils isn't possible.

3. Important Documents

Keep photocopies or digital backups of key documents like Aadhar cards, passports, insurance policies, land deeds, and medical records. Store them in waterproof and fireproof pouches to protect them from damage.

4. Basic First Aid Kit

A well-stocked kit with bandages, antiseptics, gauze, pain relievers, tweezers, scissors, and adhesive tape is essential to address minor injuries quickly. Consider including an emergency first-aid guide.

5. Emergency Contact Names

Write down contact details for family members, close friends, and local emergency services. Keep a printed copy in case your phone battery dies, or your device is lost.

6. Menstrual Supplies

Include sanitary pads, tampons, or menstrual cups to address personal hygiene needs. Consider biodegradable options to reduce waste if possible.

7. Specialized Care Supplies

For individuals with disabilities or special medical needs, pack items like wheelchairs, walkers, hearing aids with extra batteries, or specific dietary supplements. Ensure these are easily accessible in your kit.

8. Physical Map

A paper map of your area can be a lifesaver if GPS fails. Mark important locations, such as hospitals and evacuation shelters, to help you navigate in emergencies.

9. High-Quality Respirator Masks

Pack N95 masks or better to protect against smoke, dust, and airborne contaminants. These are especially vital during wildfires, industrial accidents, or pandemics.

10. Cash

Carry small denominations of cash in both local currency and major global currencies if travelling. In disaster situations, electronic payments may be unavailable, and cash is often the only acceptable form of payment.

The City of Santa Rosa thanks you for your continued commitment to disaster preparedness.
