MIDWAY, Ga. - The Liberty County Development Authority (LCDA), in partnership with the Georgia Southern University (GSU) Institute for Water and Health, is inviting Liberty County residents to participate in the new Water Academy Workshop Series and Water Stewards Certification Program, a four-week educational initiative designed to help citizens better understand Liberty County's water resources and coastal environment.
The program was recently approved by the LCDA Board of Directors as part of the Authority's ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship, public education, and informed community engagement.
The initiative offers local citizens the opportunity to learn directly from GSU water experts about local water resources, how coastal water systems work, and why they are important to public health, the environment, and quality of life.
Workshops will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Smokin' Pig, 13711 Coastal Highway, Midway, GA on the following Saturdays:
August 1, 2026
August 15, 2026
August 22, 2026
August 29, 2026
Weekly two-hour workshops will combine expert instruction and hands-on learning as participants explore how water moves through Liberty County's coastal landscape, and examine how water quality affects recreation, seafood safety, and health. Participants will also learn practical steps to protect water resources at home through proper septic system and well management. The final session will focus on community engagement, environmental stewardship, and citizen science.
Participants who complete all four workshops will receive a state-recognized Georgia Adopt-A-Stream Certification along with a Water Academy Completion Certificate. The program is designed to build a network of informed residents who can contribute to thoughtful, science-based conversations about water resources and environmental stewardship in Liberty County.
