June 30, 2026
HARRISBURG - The Pennsylvania House of Representatives today passed House Resolution 531, introduced by Rep. Sheryl M. Delozier (R-Cumberland), officially designating June 2026 as Scoliosis Awareness Month in the Commonwealth.
Scoliosis is a chronic spinal condition affecting one in 40 children and up to one in three adults. The disease, often developing during periods of rapid growth between ages 10 and 15, is idiopathic in 80% of cases, meaning the cause is unknown.
Delozier highlighted the story of Ella, a constituent from Hampden Township in the 88th District, whose diagnosis of severe idiopathic scoliosis in middle school illustrates the importance of early screening.
"By recognizing June as Scoliosis Awareness Month, we are shining a light on a condition that too often goes undiagnosed," said Delozier. "Early detection can change the course of someone's life, and Ella's story is a powerful reminder of that. Her courage and advocacy inspire all of us to do more for the thousands of Pennsylvanians living with scoliosis.
"I'm proud to elevate her voice and the voices of so many others who face scoliosis with strength. With this resolution, we are reaffirming our commitment to education, support and better outcomes for individuals across Pennsylvania."
After her pediatrician identified a rib hump at a routine well visit, Ella was diagnosed with a spinal curve of approximately 50 degrees and began bracing for more than 20 hours each day.
When bracing proved insufficient, she underwent spinal fusion surgery at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, successfully reducing her curve from nearly 60 degrees to under 15 degrees.
With the passage of House Resolution 531, Pennsylvania reaffirms its commitment to promoting early detection and supporting individuals living with scoliosis.
