Travel Advisory: Temporary Closure of Elmwood Avenue at Route 10 Overpass Scheduled for October 17-18

Starting at 11 p.m. on Friday night, October 17, the Rhode Island Department Transportation (RIDOT) will temporarily close Elmwood Avenue in both directions at the Route 10 overpass, located between Whitney Street and McKinley Street in Providence, close to Roger Williams Park. The road will be closed until approximately 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 18.

The closure is necessary so RIDOT can set pre-fabricated bridge beams on the footings for the new Route 10 bridge being built over Elmwood Avenue.

During the closure, drivers should use the following detours and recommended routes:

Elmwood Avenue Northbound: Use Park Avenue eastbound, turn right onto Route 10 northbound, and take the Elmwood Avenue exit.

Elmwood Avenue Southbound: Take Route 10 northbound to reverse direction on Route 10 at I-95, then take the Elmwood Avenue exit.

I-95 North to Roger Williams Park: Take Exit 33B for Elmwood Avenue and turn right at the end of the ramp and follow Elmwood Avenue southbound to Park Avenue. Drivers can turn left to follow the detour using Park Avenue eastbound to Route 10 or use the park entrance near Park View Middle School in Cranston.

I-95 South to Roger Williams Park: Take Exit 34. Drivers accessing Roger Williams Park from I-95 southbound will not be affected by this road closure.

RIDOT scheduled this operation to minimize the disruption to traffic as much as possible. It begins when traffic volumes are low overnight, and concludes in the early afternoon prior to the popular Roger Williams Park Zoo Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular.

The bridge replacement is part of the I-95 15 Bridges project, which will remove 15 bridges from the state's backlog of poor and fair to poor condition bridges along I-95 and Route 10 between Providence and Warwick. Nine of the 15 bridges are structurally deficient. Three are rated among the top five most traveled structurally deficient bridges in Rhode Island. At the Huntington Viaduct, RIDOT will redesign the entire interchange of Route 10 with I-95. More details are available at www.ridot.net/The-I-95-15.

All construction projects are subject to changes in schedule and scope depending on needs, circumstances, findings, and weather.

The replacement of this bridge is made possible by RhodeWorks and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. RIDOT is committed to bringing Rhode Island's infrastructure into a state of good repair while respecting the environment and striving to improve it. Learn more at www.ridot.net/RhodeWorks.
