CHICAGO - U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) and U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) today announced a total of $12,645,145 in federal funding for the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to support the Southern Illinois Truck Parking Expansion Project.
This funding, from U.S. Department of Transportation's (DOT) FY26 INFRA Track 2 program, will support the reconstruction and expansion of the Green Creek Southbound and Post Oak Southbound rest areas on Interstate 57 in Illinois by constructing new facilities, upgrading utilities and drainage, and adding approximately 38 truck parking spaces. In addition, the project will deploy Truck Parking Information Management System technologies including automated vehicle detection, electronic kiosks, and security equipment.
"Truck drivers are essential to keeping our economy moving, and they deserve safe, reliable places to rest while on the road. This $12.6 million dollar investment into our trucking industry will help expand parking along I-57 as well as improve safety at the Green Creek and Post Oak rest areas, giving drivers better access to the facilities that they need," Durbin said. "It is vital to support funding for these improvements that keep our communities and our supply chains moving."
"Safe, reliable rest areas are essential for the truck drivers who keep our economy moving and the travelers who rely on Illinois' roads every day," Duckworth said. "This significant federal investment will expand truck parking and modernize rest areas in Marion County, increasing parking capacity, improving facilities and making travel safer for drivers."
This project will enhance trucker safety by more than doubling the current commercial parking capacity at two of the I-57 rest areas, while also modernizing aging infrastructure to reduce long-term maintenance costs. Expanded parking and regional parking information systems will also improve travel efficiency, saving drivers an estimated 36 to 44 minutes per route and strengthening supply chain reliability.
