On Thursday, April 30, at 1:47 p.m., Columbia Fire Department (CFD) companies were dispatched to a commercial structure fire in the 2400 block of Whitegate Drive.
CFD arrived within four minutes to find a two-story apartment complex with smoke showing from a second-story unit. Firefighters immediately ascended the stairs to gain access to the fire before simultaneously searching for possible victims and beginning fire attack to control the flames. The incident was under control within approximately 15 minutes of CFD arrival.
The only occupant who was home at the time of the fire had evacuated the structure prior to CFD arrival by jumping out of a window and was transported via ambulance to a local hospital for evaluation.
A total of five fire companies, two battalion chiefs and one safety captain with 19 personnel responded to this incident.
The Columbia Fire Marshals Battalion is currently conducting an investigation into the origin and cause of the fire.
