ATLANTA - State Representative Regina Lewis-Ward (D-McDonough) recently joined advocates, farmers and community leaders at a press conference in support of Illinois Black Farmers and Growers Lobby Day, highlighting the role Black farmers play in strengthening local economies, ensuring food security and preserving agricultural heritage.
"Through rejected loan applications, denied grant awards and limited technical trainings, Black farmers still stand and are resilient," said Rep. Lewis-Ward. "Today is not only about recognition-it is about reaffirming my commitment to equity, access and opportunity within the agricultural sector."
Rep. Lewis-Ward emphasizes the importance of addressing systemic barriers that have historically limited access to capital and federal resources for Black farmers. She calls for continued collaboration across state lines to advance policies that support sustainability, pathways to legacy and generational wealth-building in agriculture.
"Being here in Springfield at the Black Farmers and Growers Lobby Day reignited a flame to fight for our civil rights and re-energized my commitment to call out racial injustices in AI algorithms, as well as demand racial equity in the agriculture industry," added Rep. Lewis-Ward. "We must ensure that future generations have both the resources and the support to thrive in this industry."
The 2026 Illinois Black Farmers and Growers Lobby Day, hosted by Illinois State Representative Sonya Harper, provides an opportunity to celebrate contributions, raise awareness and advocate for policies that strengthen the agricultural community.
Representative Regina Lewis-Ward represents the citizens of 115, which includes portions of DeKalb and Henry counties. She was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2020 and currently serves on the Agriculture & Consumer Affairs, Banks & Banking, Energy, Utilities & Telecommunications and Interstate Cooperation committees.
