Through a longstanding partnership with Project Homeless Connect, Providence St. Vincent Medical Center nurses and certified nursing assistants volunteer at community events designed to connect people experiencing homelessness with essential services.

By bringing care directly into the community, volunteers help remove barriers that can make healthcare feel out of reach.

At a recent event in Beaverton, more than 400 people received support from local organizations and volunteers. Providence caregivers offered blood pressure and blood sugar screenings, wellness education, over-the-counter medications and personalized health guidance tailored to individual needs.

"Our nurses' station is very well received by those who visit us," says oncology nurse and volunteer Elaine Kramer, RN. "Some patrons want to have blood pressure or blood sugars checked, but many also visibly enjoy the company and conversation."

Building trust through connection

For many visitors, the opportunity to connect with a compassionate healthcare professional can be just as valuable as receiving a health screening.

"Meeting people where they are as a friendly face and having open conversations promotes healthcare as a safe space. Many people shy away from seeking medical care when needed due to fear of judgement. When we seek people out, we show that we want to help," Eileen says.

By meeting people with dignity, respect and personalized support, Providence caregivers are helping create healthier communities and making healthcare more accessible for those who need it most.
