Eastbound I-90 on-ramp from SH-41 to close for one week starting Friday

POST FALLS - With several changes happening along the Interstate 90 corridor between Post Falls and Coeur d'Alene, the Idaho Transportation Department is asking drivers to prepare for one more as crews ready the interstate for a major traffic shift later this month.

As announced in ITD's September 25 update, the eastbound I-90 on-ramp from State Highway 41 in Post Falls will close for approximately one week as work continues on the I-90 widening project. That full, 24/7 on-ramp closure is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Friday, and last for up to a full week, opening on October 9. The closure is needed to prepare the west side of the widening project for the shift that will move both westbound lanes to the south side of the interstate. Friday there will also be a single-night lane reduction for eastbound drivers through the area from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. while barriers are set in place.

SH-41 EASTBOUND ON-RAMP CLOSURE

During the closure, the eastbound I-90 on-ramp from SH-41 will be closed to all traffic, around the clock. The westbound I-90 on-ramp and both off-ramps connected to SH-41 will remain open.

Drivers will be directed west on Seltice Way to the neighboring eastbound I-90 on-ramp near the Seltice Way bridge over the interstate. Drivers should plan for extra travel time and follow posted detour signs. (Detour map)

"We know there's a lot happening on I-90 right now, and we truly appreciate drivers' patience and understanding as we make progress on this major expansion project," Project Manager James Dorman said. "The widening project is moving quickly, and every step has a purpose. Staying on schedule is how we keep the project on time and on budget, and ultimately deliver a safer, more efficient interstate in the future."

WHAT'S AHEAD

• Trail impacts: Starting October 12, Prairie Trail is scheduled to close beneath I-90 for approximately one week as crews begin demolition work on the westbound interstate bridge.
• I-90 paving: Tentatively scheduled to start Oct. 16, ITD will begin paving on I-90 between US-95 and Northwest Boulevard. Traffic will be reduced to a single lane in both directions, day and night, through Oct. 18.
• Upcoming I-90 traffic shift: Targeted for October 20, both lanes of westbound I-90 will shift to the south side of the freeway and is expected to remain that way for a full year.
• Huetter Road Closure: After the I-90 traffic shift around Oct. 20, Huetter Road beneath the interstate will close for up to two weeks.
• Overnight SH-41 Westbound off-ramp closure: Shortly after the traffic shift, overnight closures of westbound SH-41 off-ramp will be required for several weeks. The exact timing of these changes will depend on how work progresses over the coming weeks.

ITD remains committed to providing updates and reminders as more detailed information is known. Drivers should slow down, stay alert and follow posted speed limits through all work zones for their own safety, and project crews working alongside the road. The I-90 widening project between SH-41 and US-95 is expected to continue through 2029 and will ultimately widen I-90 to four lanes in each direction.

Expansion of the interstate is primarily funded with Transportation Expansion and Congestion Mitigation, or TECM funds, as part of Governor Little's Leading Idaho initiative. The TECM program allows ITD to accelerate project timelines to address rapid growth and build critical infrastructure today that would otherwise take many years to fund and build.
