Serve on the Washington County Planning Commission

News article

Posted November 6, 2026

Throughout November, we want to connect with community members interested in serving on the Washington County Planning Commission (PC). This is an opportunity to help shape the future of our community by making recommendations to the Board of Commissioners (Board) on land use planning and policy, while ensuring that community members are meaningfully involved in the planning process.

The PC consists of nine community volunteers appointed by the Board to serve four-year terms. They advise the Board on the adoption, revision, or repeal of portions of the County's Comprehensive Plan, including the Community Development Code.

The PC also makes final land use decisions for some plan amendments and serves as the County's officially recognized committee for citizen involvement for purposes of Statewide Planning Goal 1.

The Planning Commission reviews meeting materials in advance, participates in public hearings, and engages in respectful, informed discussion. Ideal applicants bring curiosity, fairness, and a commitment to community service.

In addition, PC members:

  • Reside in Washington County.
  • Represent all communities in Washington County.
  • Have professional or lived experience with land use policy and planning.
  • Can commit at least 5 to 10 hours per month to review meeting materials.
  • Participate in two PC meetings per month, on the 1st Wednesday (1:30 p.m.), and 3rd Wednesday (6:30 p.m.). Meetings typically run 2 to 3 hours.
  • May serve up to two, four-year terms.

Learn more about the Planning Commission, connect with the Planning Commission Liaison to ask questions, and submit your application for consideration.
