Governor signs bills to ease regulation on smaller units

Gov. Gavin Newsom recently signed two bills that make accessory dwelling units, known as ADUs, and junior accessory dwelling units, or JADUs, easier to build and manage.

The first bill, SB 9 by Sen. Jesse Arreguin, D-Berkeley, invalidates any ADU ordinance if the local agency that adopts the ordinance fails to submit a copy to the state Department of Housing and Community Development to ensure compliance with state standards.
