Georgia College & State University's Keaton Prior has been named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association NCAA Division II National Pitcher of the Week ending March 2.
Prior, a junior from Milledgeville, Georgia., tossed a no-hitter as the Bobcats took the series opener against the University of South Carolina-Beaufort 11-0 in seven innings. It was the first no-no for the Bobcats since Michael Joyce twirled his in a 7-0 (7 innings) win against Kennesaw State University on Feb. 26, 2000. Prior struck out eight and allowed just one runner to get to third base in the 98-pitch complete-game effort. He walked two, hit a batter and had another reach on a throwing error. Prior retired 14 of the final 15 batters he faced.
On the season, Prior ranks among the Peach Belt Conference leaders in several categories, including tied for second in fewest runs allowed (10), third in fewest hits allowed (17) and fourth in opponent batting average (.198)
Prior is only the second Bobcat in program history to be named a NCBWA National Player of the Week. Dylan Cook was named the National Hitter of the Week during the 2016 season.
The Bobcats, who are currently riding a four-game winning streak, returns to Peach Belt Conference action when they open up a three-game weekend series against Middle Georgia State University. First pitch of the series opener is Friday, March 6, at 4 p.m. in Cochran, Georgia.
