Honourary Street Naming Celebrates Legacy of Leo Ledohowski and Canad Inns’ 50th Anniversary

Today, Mayor Gillingham announced an honourary street renaming designating Jefferson Avenue between McPhillips Street and Watson Street as "Leo Ledohowski Way," recognizing the Canad Inns founder's contributions to Winnipeg's hospitality industry.

"Leo Ledohowski leaves behind an extraordinary legacy," said Councillor Janice Lukes, on behalf of Mayor Gillingham. "For five decades, Canad Inns has played an important role in welcoming people to Winnipeg, supporting local jobs and businesses, and strengthening communities through its ongoing commitment to charitable, cultural and community initiatives."

Ledohowski's contributions extended far beyond business, he held leadership roles with organizations including the Business Council of Manitoba, Destination Winnipeg, the Manitoba Hotel Association, the Hotel Association of Canada, Partners in the Park, the Business Development Bank of Canada, the Bank of Canada and the City of Winnipeg's Red Tape Commission.

He also served as Honorary Consul for Ukraine in Manitoba and was widely respected for his leadership within the Ukrainian Canadian community.

"Our father was incredibly proud of Winnipeg and Manitoba," said Lea Ledohowski, daughter and President of Canad Inns on behalf of Leo's children Lindy, Lane & Laurel Ledohowski. "While he was passionate about business, his greatest pride came from the people he worked alongside, the friendships he built, and the family he cherished. We are deeply honoured that the City of Winnipeg has chosen to recognize his legacy in this way and grateful that future generations will be reminded of his contributions to the community he loved."

Ledohowski was also known as a generous mentor, philanthropist and community builder. He received numerous honours throughout his lifetime, including the University of Manitoba Distinguished Service Award, designation as a Fellow of the Certified Management Accountants and was appointed to the Order of Manitoba.

"This recognition is incredibly meaningful to our organization and to the many people whose lives Leo touched over the years," said Dan Lussier, CEO of Canad Inns. "Leo believed that success was measured not only by business achievements, but by the relationships we build, the opportunities we create for others, and the communities we support. Seeing his name recognized in the city he loved is a fitting tribute to a remarkable entrepreneur, mentor, and community leader."

As part of the ceremony, Councillor Lukes also presented a Mayor's Organizational Community Service Award to Canad Inns, recognizing the organization's 50th anniversary and its longstanding contributions to Winnipeg and Manitoba.
