Government to commemorate Ukrainian Independence Day on Monday 24 August

The Government will commemorate Ukrainian Independence Day by flying the Ukrainian flag at Senate Square on Monday 24 August. The Ministry for Foreign Affairs' main building Merikasarmi will also be illuminated in the colours of the Ukrainian flag.

"The war in Ukraine is not only being waged on the front. Russia is attacking civilians, as well as civilian and energy infrastructure. According to the UN, in July of this year, the number of civilian casualties in Ukraine rose to the highest level since May 2022. Supporting Ukraine does more than just that, it supports the future of Europe as a whole. Finland is committed to continuing its support for Ukraine," said Prime Minister Petteri Orpo.

Prime Minister Orpo will speak at an event marking Ukrainian Independence Day on Monday 24 August at Senate Square. Other members of the state leadership will also be in attendance.

Event at Senate Square to mark Ukrainian Independence Day

The Ukrainian Independence Day event at Senate Square is open to the public and will begin at 17.00. The event is organised by the Lutheran Church in Helsinki and the Ukrainian Association in Finland in collaboration with the City of Helsinki, the University of Helsinki, the Prime Minister's Office and the Embassy of Ukraine.

During the event, the stairs at Senate Square will be decorated with sunflowers.
