Washington, D.C. - Today, Congressman Chip Roy (TX-21) sent a letter to Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Robert F. Kennedy Jr. asking his department to further investigate the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and several other Islamic groups for their potential abuse of taxpayer-funded grants and ties to terrorism.
The letter asks HHS to investigate whether these groups "meet the standards for suspension and debarment under federal regulations" after "new research suggests that HHS funding of terrorist-linked organizations was much more widespread than previously understood."
The letter continues: "A recent study found nearly $80 million in HHS-originated grants to extremist groups, many with ties to foreign terrorists. The overwhelming majority were approved during the Biden-Harris administration and included cash handouts to Afghan immigrants and $14 million in grants to radical foreign groups."
The Daily Signal wrote an exclusive report on the letter, which you can read here.
Co-signers of the letter include: Representatives Michael Cloud (R-TX), Randy Weber (R-TX), Buddy Carter (R-GA), Randy Fine (R-FL), Clay Higgins (R-LA), Keith Self (R-TX), Andrew Clyde (R-GA), and Mary Miller (R-IL).
Rep. Roy's Other Actions on CAIR:
On April 27, Rep. Roy sent a letter to Secretary Kennedy Jr. urging HHS to suspend funding for CAIR and its affiliates and initiate debarment proceedings after a DOJ investigation found suspected misuse in federal grants by CAIR. On June 10, following the letter, Secretary Kennedy Jr. announced his department opened an investigation.
Under Secretary Kennedy's leadership, HHS has decisively fought against suspected fraud and misuse of taxpayer dollars at hands of opportunity groups like CAIR.
Additionally, on April 9, Rep. Roy introduced the Designating Hamas Affiliates in America Act of 2026 to designate the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist Organization, blocking its assets and prohibiting U.S. persons from interacting with the organization.
Rep. Roy also introduced No Tax Exemptions for Terror Act, which would eliminate the tax-exempt status for extremist groups with close ties to terrorist organizations, such as CAIR.
