Taoiseach Micheál Martin is travelling to New York today (Sunday 21 September) for a series of engagements for the United Nations General Assembly's High-Level week.

He will attend the High-Level Conference on the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution. He will also attend an event hosted by Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney and the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Advancing Peace in Ukraine through the return of Ukrainian children.

There will also be events to mark 80 years of the UN. The Taoiseach will also hold a number of bilateral meetings with other leaders, including with the UN Secretary General António Guterres.

On Thursday the Taoiseach will travel to Ottawa, Canada to meet with Prime Minister Mark Carney and attend events with Irish community and business leaders, and the Canada Ireland Interparliamentary group.

On Friday he will deliver the National Statement to the United National Statement to the United Nations General Assembly.

Speaking ahead of his attendance the Taoiseach said:

"I look forward to travelling to New York for the United Nations General Assembly. As we mark 80 years of the UN, my focus will be on working with world leaders to address the significant global challenges that we are facing, particularly in the Middle East, Ukraine and Sudan.

Achieving progress for the Middle East will be a priority for the international community, which will include a high-level conference on a two-state solution. It is important that we use recent momentum in terms of recognition of Palestine to achieve an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages, the delivery of humanitarian assistance and a definitive progress towards a lasting peace. Russia's ongoing aggression against Ukraine is another priority and I will meet with fellow leaders to discuss how best we can support Ukraine and work towards a lasting peace based on the principles of the UN Charter. The Irish people have been clear in our support for Ukraine against Russia's invasion. I will also be raising with other leaders the catastrophic humanitarian disaster in Sudan as the civil war continues to rage on. We must do everything in our power to negotiate a ceasefire, put in place a humanitarian response and achieve a lasting peace.

I will also be travelling to Ottawa for my first formal meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney. This will be an invaluable opportunity to take stock of our bilateral relationship and discuss future cooperation, as well as discussing global issues and areas where we can work together to achieve progress."
