Meeting with the European Commissioner for Trade, Maroš Šefčovič

The President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, received the European Commissioner for Trade, Maroš Šefčovič, at Palazzo Chigi today.

The meeting focused on the priorities for the European Union's trade policy and economic security.

Particular attention was paid to implementation of the EU-US joint statement of 21 August this year, starting with the prospects for increasing the number of tariff-exempt sectors and finalising an agreement on steel and aluminium.

With reference to the EU-Mercosur agreement, President Meloni reiterated the need to offer concrete responses to the concerns of the agricultural sector and asked the Commissioner to continue along the path undertaken in recent months to strengthen safeguards for sensitive agricultural products.
