LOS ANGELES - Senator María Elena Durazo (D-Los Angeles) today celebrated Governor Newsom's signing of SB 707, the Brown Act Modernization Act. The Governor signed SB 707 on Friday, October 3. This legislation creates more equitable opportunities for diverse public engagement in local government meetings across California.
"I want to thank Governor Newsom for his leadership in signing this important legislation," said Senator Durazo. "For too long, working families and underrepresented communities have faced barriers to participating in local government. A nurse working the night shift or a community college student juggling classes shouldn't be shut out of civic engagement. SB 707 brings the Brown Act into the 21st century by expanding teleconferencing options and improving public access, ensuring that everyone has a voice in the decisions that affect their lives."
The legislation maintains teleconferencing flexibility for legislative bodies while requiring city councils and county boards of supervisors to improve remote access for the public. Additionally, it allows remote participation for advisory bodies with appropriate guardrails and extends sunset dates for existing teleconferencing provisions, including an extension for Los Angeles neighborhood councils.
"This is about democracy and inclusion," added Senator Durazo. "Every Californian deserves the opportunity to engage with their local government, regardless of their work schedule or zip code."
SB 707 was sponsored by the Student Senate for California Community Colleges and supported by a broad coalition including the California State Association of Counties, Urban Counties of California, Rural County Representatives of California, HOPE Latinas, and numerous community organizations.
