Scoliosis Awareness Month

By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:

Scoliosis Awareness Month

WHEREAS, scoliosis is a medical condition characterized by an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine, affecting individuals of all ages, including children, adolescents, and adults; and

WHEREAS, scoliosis affects approximately 2 to 3 percent of the population, representing an estimated six to nine million individuals in the United States; and

WHEREAS, adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is the most common form and typically develops during periods of rapid growth, affecting girls approximately ten times more often than boys; and

WHEREAS, early detection through screening and clinical evaluation supports more effective management and may reduce the likelihood of curve progression; and

WHEREAS, individuals with scoliosis can lead active, healthy, and productive lives with appropriate care and support; and

WHEREAS, organizations such as the National Scoliosis Foundation, the Setting Scoliosis Straight Foundation, and the Scoliosis Research Society work to advance public awareness, research, and support for individuals affected by scoliosis;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Abigail D. Spanberger, Governor, do hereby recognize June 2026, as SCOLIOSIS AWARENESS MONTH in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
