Emergency Response: Washington Wildfires, Venezuela, and More

Over the past week, Direct Relief has delivered 316 shipments of requested medical aid to 38 U.S. states and territories and 23 countries worldwide. The shipments contained 16.6 million defined daily doses of medication.

Medications and supplies shipped this week included diabetes treatments, rare disease medications, N95 respirators, surgical supplies, and more.

Requested Aid Departs for Washington Wildfire Response

Direct Relief continues to respond to wildfires burning across Washington, dispatching medical aid to support displaced people and frontline health responders. Sixteen fires are currently burning statewide, including several near Spokane that have prompted the evacuation of more than 67,000 people and burned hundreds of structures. Air quality across the state has been significantly affected by smoke and particulate matter.

Direct Relief staff have been on the ground conducting assessments with fire incident command, search and rescue teams, healthcare providers, and shelter operations to identify response needs. Field medic packs, personal care products for displaced people, and personal protective equipment for residents returning to burn areas have been shipped to fire-impacted communities.

Since July 20, Direct Relief has provided more than $165,000 in medical aid for fire response across the state and continues to monitor conditions as needs evolve.

37-Pallet Shipment Arrives in Venezuela to Support Earthquake Response

Earlier this week, Direct Relief partner Fundación Wayuu Taya, or FWT, received a 37-pallet shipment, marking the third shipment the organization has received in response to the earthquakes. The shipment includes medicines, medical supplies, hygiene products, backpacks, hygiene kits, medical-grade tents, and personal protective equipment.

FWT is using the donated supplies to support local medical facilities and other healthcare organizations responding to the earthquakes, as well as shelters throughout the Caracas and La Guaira areas. The organization is also a recipient of a $100,000 cash grant to fund the procurement of a vehicle to support ongoing distribution and logistics of aid to affected communities.

Direct Relief's support for the Venezuela earthquake response has included more than 24 tons of medical aid and supplies as well as $300,000 in grants to four organizations.

Midwife Kits Strengthen Carein Afghanistan

Afshar Hospital's maternity department in Kabul, Afghanistan, recently received Midwife Kits donated by Direct Relief. The kits include medicines, medical supplies, and instruments designed to improve the safety and quality of maternal and newborn care.

"Now, everything we need for emergency maternal care is available in one kit," said a midwife at Afshar Hospital. "We can respond quickly and confidently, which has improved the care we provide to mothers and newborns."

Medicines and supplies are provided to patients at no cost, helping families access lifesaving and preventive care regardless of their financial situation.
