Alachua County: Supporting Family Values

Page Content

Alachua County's $31,000 in funding support for Planned Parenthood's "Time For Your Teen" program was recently highlighted by our governor. This is a great opportunity to share information about this valuable resource.

This program is designed to build stronger connections by working directly with parents/guardians and their teenagers (13-19). It is available for free both online and in person. By promoting trust and encouraging open dialogue about sex education, abstinence, sexually transmitted diseases, screenings, and healthy decision-making, Time For Your Teen promotes positive behaviors and reinforces family values that can last a lifetime.

The importance of awareness and prevention cannot be overstated. Nearly 80% of teen pregnancies are unplanned, and many result in long-term challenges for young parents, including school dropout, unemployment, health issues, and substance abuse. The CDC reports that teen pregnancies cost taxpayers more than $9 billion annually. Florida ranks 25th in the nation for teen pregnancies, with Florida taxpayers paying for more than $443 million in services related to teen pregnancies each year.

Alachua County's modest $31,000 investment in this program demonstrates how local community action can make long-lasting, measurable differences, save taxpayer dollars, and build stronger futures for families. The county believes this program aligns with our community's support for healthier families and brighter futures for our youth.
