On February 2, 2026, the Governments of Mexico, Brazil and Chile submitted to the United Nations the candidacy of Michelle Bachelet for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations. The former President of Chile has held senior positions in the multilateral system, including United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and Executive Director of UN Women.
This candidacy reflects our countries' shared commitment to actively strengthening the multilateral system and promoting leadership capable of addressing today's challenges. Former President Bachelet's extensive experience managing complex political processes, her proven ability to facilitate dialogue, and her dedication to the fundamental values of the United Nations position her to make a significant contribution to moving towards a more effective, representative organization focused on people's well-being.
Michelle Bachelet's candidacy represents an opportunity to provide the UN with leadership that brings proven experience, international legitimacy and a commitment to public service. We support this candidacy with the conviction that her leadership will help fulfill the purposes and principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter.
In an increasingly complex international environment, the United Nations remains the primary forum for dialogue and building collective solutions on international peace and security, sustainable development, human rights, and climate action. We reaffirm our commitment to multilateralism as an essential pillar for global governance based on international cooperation and respect for the self-determination of peoples.
