BOWIE, Md. - Bowie State University has been named a 2026 Top Yellow Ribbon School by U.S. Veterans Magazine, recognizing the university's longstanding commitment to supporting veterans, active-duty service members and military families through specialized services, career-focused programming and financial assistance.
"We are honored to be recognized by U.S. Veterans Magazine," said Dr. Aminta H. Breaux, president of Bowie State University. "This recognition reflects Bowie State's longstanding commitment to serving veterans, active-duty service members and military families through comprehensive support services, dedicated resources and expanded pathways to academic and career success. As Maryland's first HBCU, we are proud to foster an environment where military-connected students are empowered to thrive, lead and achieve their educational goals."
The honor adds to a growing list of military-focused distinctions earned by the university. Earlier this year, Bowie State was recognized as a 2026-27 Military Friendly® School and Military Spouse Friendly School, continuing designations it has held since 2019 and 2025, respectively.
According to U.S. Veterans Magazine, Top Yellow Ribbon Schools are institutions that go above and beyond in supporting veterans through dedicated resources, veteran-centered services, career support and programs that ease the transition from military service to higher education and the workforce.
During the spring 2026 semester, Bowie State served 503 military-affiliated students, including 415 students utilizing GI Bill® benefits and 88 students serving on active duty, in the Reserve and National Guard. Through its Military Resource Center and Office of Veteran Services, the university provides personalized guidance, academic support and assistance navigating military education benefits.
Bowie State continues to expand opportunities that help military-connected students translate their service experience into academic and professional success. Partnerships with academic departments have increased access to practicum and internship experiences, while faculty development workshops help instructors better support students transitioning from military service to the classroom.
The university is also strengthening partnerships with military installations, veteran-serving organizations and employers to create additional pathways for education, career development and workforce success.
In fall 2026, the Military Resource Center will relocate to a newly renovated building on campus, which will feature a dedicated lounge, study space and gathering area designed to support military-connected students.
Bowie State has also expanded its Green Zone program, training faculty and staff across campus to better understand and address the unique needs of military-affiliated students. These efforts help create a supportive and inclusive environment where veterans and their families can thrive.
As a participant in the federal Yellow Ribbon Program, Bowie State helps make higher education more accessible and affordable for eligible veterans and their families. The university's continued investment in specialized services, career development opportunities and military-focused resources underscores its commitment to student success and long-term career outcomes.
U.S. Veterans Magazine conducts an annual national evaluation of schools and organizations that demonstrate measurable impact and sustained support for veterans and transitioning service members.
