Des Moines, Iowa - Thursday, September 3, 2026 - As Labor Day and the end of summer approaches, the City of Des Moines encourages residents and visitors to take advantage of our aquatic facilities, and boat rentals at Gray's Lake Park for the final weekend of the season.
Aquatics
While our regular pool season is over, you can still beat the heat with your family at the following locations through Labor Day Weekend:
Our 21 spraygrounds at parks throughout the city will continue regular hours through Sept. 30, 2026.
Gray's Lake Boat Rentals and Concessions
Labor Day is the final day of the year for concessions and boat rentals at Gray's Lake Park (2101 Fleur Dr).
In addition to watercraft, Gray's Lake Park also offers a variety of adult and children's bicycles for rent and refreshing concession stand treats. Hours are 1-8 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and 1-8 p.m. on Labor Day.
Holiday Closures
In observance of the holiday, most City of Des Moines administration buildings will be closed on Monday, Sept. 7, 2026. There will be a one-day delay of garbage, recycling, and yard waste collection for the week.
All Des Moines Public Library branches will be closed on Sunday, Sept. 6 and Monday, Sept. 7.
City buildings will reopen and curbside collection will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 8.
