Deceased pedestrian identified from fatal crash on March 18, 2026, in the 5800 block of North Academy Boulevard

On March 18, 2026, at approximately 6:20 a.m., the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) received a call for service regarding a traffic crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian near the 5800 block of North Academy Boulevard. Officers responded and determined that the pedestrian was attempting to cross Academy Boulevard mid-block when he was struck in the northbound lanes of travel by a northbound vehicle.

Despite medical intervention and life-saving measures, the pedestrian was pronounced deceased on scene. Based on the circumstances, the CSPD Major Crash Team responded and assumed responsibility for the investigation. All lanes of northbound and all but one southbound lane of Academy Blvd were closed for several hours while investigators processed the scene.

On March 19, 2026, the El Paso County Coroner's Office conducted an autopsy on the deceased pedestrian and identified him as 75-year-old Harlo Peterson.

This was the 10th traffic fatality in Colorado Springs this year. At this time last year, there was one traffic fatality. In the last 365 days, there have been 60 traffic fatalities in Colorado Springs.
