Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani had a telephone conversation today with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Abbas Araghchi.
The two ministers began by discussing the situation in Hormuz: Minister Araghchi outlined the negotiations between Iran and Oman to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to commercial traffic. Tajani reiterated his hope that a full resumption of dialogue between Iran and the United States would swiftly lead to a political and lasting solution to the crisis, thereby preventing further military escalation. The Minister also reiterated that it is essential to restore full freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, without the imposition of tariffs or other restrictions on maritime traffic. He then pointed out that stability in the region has positive effects that extend far beyond the Middle East, with benefits also for the global economy and for hydrocarbon price trends. Finally, Tajani emphasised the importance of preventing further escalations in the Red Sea and the Strait of Bab el-Mandeb, by avoiding actions that could jeopardise the safety and freedom of navigation.
The two ministers then held an in-depth discussion on Lebanon. Tajani highlighted the great importance Italy attaches to stability in Lebanon and expressed the hope that the second round of negotiations between Lebanon and Israel, currently taking place in Rome, would yield concrete results. Araghchi set out the Iranian perspective, giving a preview of some diplomatic proposals that Tehran intends to put forward on the issue.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs reiterated the importance of making progress in implementing the commitments undertaken by the parties, with particular reference to the disarmament of Hezbollah and the simultaneous restoration of the Lebanese State's sovereignty over its entire national territory. Tajani confirmed that Italy will continue to work at a political and diplomatic level to support any initiative aimed at promoting dialogue and regional stability. In this regard, Italy is ready to continue playing its part, in close cooperation with its regional and international partners.
