Dear Adelphi Community,
The Department of Public Safety and Transportation responded today, September 29, to reports of an individual soliciting donations on the Garden City campus. The individual was escorted off campus and issued a verbal warning to stay away (persona non grata). Thank you to the community members who reported suspicious activity; your continued vigilance helps us ensure a safe campus community
Our top priority is always the safety of our campus community. Solicitation is not permitted on Adelphi's campuses.
If you become aware of solicitation or peddling activities on University property, note what the individual is attempting to sell or promote along with a description of the person. Please notify Public Safety immediately by dialing "5" from any campus phone or calling 516.877.3511 to speak to an officer.
Safety Tips when dealing with a solicitor
Decline politely but firmly. You are under no obligation to engage with a solicitor. A simple "No, thank you" or "Not interested" is enough. An aggressive or pushy solicitor may be a scammer.
Do not share personal information. Never give a solicitor your name, address, phone number, or other personal details, especially financial information like credit card numbers or banking information.
Trust your instincts. If an interaction with a solicitor makes you feel uneasy, it is best to end the conversation and walk away. Your intuition can be your best defense against potential threats.
Maintain awareness of your surroundings. Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings. Avoid being distracted by your phone, especially when walking alone at night.
