Escambia County is excited to recognize Lead Animal Welfare Officer Sgt. Merideth Roberson as the October 2025 Employee of the Month. Sgt. Roberson's selection was recognized with a proclamation during the Oct. 2 Board of County Commissioners meeting.
Sgt. Roberson, who began her career with Escambia County in 2021, serves as the Department of Animal Welfare's Lead Animal Welfare Officer, working diligently each day alongside a dedicated team of Animal Welfare Officers. Her primary duties include enforcing and investigating state and local animal control laws and ordinances and ensuring the humane handling and treatment of animals. Sgt. Roberson has been recognized by her team for her compassion for animals, forward-thinking initiatives for the department, and knowledge and expertise when responding to calls for service.
"I'm proud of Sgt. Roberson for this recognition and the great work she does each day for the animals in our community," Animal Welfare Director John Robinson said. "It takes a lot to build a team like we have, and Sgt. Roberson is a vital member of that team. She is truly passionate about animal welfare and consistently goes above and beyond for all animals, whether they're household pets or wildlife animals. We're excited to recognize her and everything she does for the community."
Sgt. Roberson also serves as a leader for the Animal Search and Rescue Team, a disaster response team comprised of Animal Welfare Officers and first responders. The ASAR team trains year-round in several disciplines including large animal rescues and water rescue tactics to remain ready to respond during any event.
As a team leader, she ensures officers are thoroughly trained and provides guidance on preparation procedures for disaster events. Her training has helped her respond to hundreds of animal rescue calls in Escambia County, several of which were featured on local and national news, including the rescue of a Muscovy duck struck by an arrow, a juvenile bald eagle, an injured baby opossum, a kitten stuck in a drainage pipe, and many others.
Her passion for helping animals extends outside investigating cruelty cases and calls for service. Earlier this year, Sgt. Roberson created a social media outreach project called "Badge Buddies," an initiative aimed at helping promote adoptions while highlighting the connections that Animal Welfare Officers have with the animals. She also attends multiple community outreach events throughout the year to spread awareness of the Department of Animal Welfare.
"I'm very appreciative to be receiving Employee of the Month," Sgt. Roberson said. "Working with animals has always been my passion and each time we rescue an animal in need or reunite a lost pet with its owners, it fills my cup. The employee I am today is a reflection of the support, encouragement, and teamwork of my coworkers. We have the best team and I'm grateful to be a part of it."
