Summer Internship Spotlight: Dakota Frey

Dakota Frey, an undergraduate student pursuing a double major in the music industry, completed an internship with Stray production services over the summer. Stray productions is a full-service event production and audio visual and system control installation company located at Rock Lititz. Events that Frey helped with included graduations, fundraisers, concerts, conventions and galas, to name a few.

Frey's responsibilities during the internship included loading in and loading out equipment for a variety of events, along with some shop work.

"I have acquired a plethora of skills from audio, lighting, video and even staging," says Frey, who also gained insight into how to "make it" in the industry. "Hearing that there are a lot of audio techs, sound board ops, and audio engineering positions entering the music industry nowadays, I wanted to focus on adding lighting or video to my skillset alongside audio." That way, she would have a leg-up on the competition and would be more than "just an audio guy."

Frey also expanded her skills in adaptability, problem solving, patience, "The greatest part was being able to work with everyone there. I would work with different coworkers at each event, and they were all kind and took the time to teach me and help me grow.

"The biggest challenge I faced was being okay doing nothing. While not often, there were times where we had to wait for extra supplies, or there were enough people already doing a job, or there was a specific certification that needed to be done." It was difficult for Frey to stand back when she wanted to lend an extra hand. Frey continues, "Taking the time to wait to do the job effectively and accurately the first time is worth it."

Frey says that if a student gets the opportunity to work with Stray productions, "Don't hesitate. The people at Stray put passion and care into their work. They go the extra mile for their clients, while caring about their coworkers." It is a great opportunity, Frey continues, "I would recommend them for anyone's live service needs all across Lancaster."
