As previously discussed publicly, the MBTA today reminded riders that the Fairbanks Street stop will permanently close. Beginning Saturday, November 7, 2026, Green Line trains will no longer make stops at Fairbanks Street.
During the upcoming Green Line service outage November 7 - 15, free and accessible shuttle buses will still make stops at Fairbanks Street, but the station itself will be decommissioned.
As part of major accessibility upgrades taking place on the Green Line C branch, Fairbanks Street is being consolidated with the upgraded Brandon Hall stop, which can be accessed from the existing Fairbanks Street location via a new, accessible ramp and a new walkway. The upgraded Brandon Hall stop also includes wider and raised platforms, sloped walkways, better lighting, and other improved station amenities. By the end of this year, the Kent Street stop will also be decommissioned as part of the project. With fully accessible and upgraded stations nearby, decommissioning these stops provides improved station spacing for more consistent time between trains, allowing for quicker trips along Beacon Street and improved service reliability.
The Green Line is the nation's oldest light rail subway line, and nearly all Green Line stations were built before the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA). The MBTA continues to make major progress in upgrading the accessibility of the Green Line, and when the Green Line C Branch Station Accessibility Improvements project is complete, all stations along the C branch will be accessible.
