LOS ANGELES - Mayor Karen Bass today urged Governor Gavin Newsom to sign two bills into law aimed at holding cold storage companies accountable in the wake of the Lineage warehouse fire in Boyle Heights. Mayor Bass sponsored AB 817, introduced by Assemblymember Mark González, which aims to hold cold storage companies accountable when something goes wrong and ensure communities are protected, including requiring cold storage facilities to maintain a contingency fund before receiving a new building permit.
Mayor Bass also supported SB 716, introduced by Senator María Elena Durazo, to strengthen penalties for violations at large commercial buildings when serious incidents occur. Last week, Mayor Bass' Office provided testimony before the State Senate Revenue and Taxation Committee and the State Senate Local Government Committee in Sacramento in support of Assembly Bill 817.
"At every turn, Lineage has failed to meet its responsibility to Boyle Heights and East L.A. and to provide meaningful support to residents and small businesses," said Mayor Bass. "We cannot change what happened in Boyle Heights, but we can change what happens next. These bills aim to hold cold storage companies accountable if something goes wrong to ensure communities are protected. I thank my friends Assemblymember González and Senator Durazo for introducing this legislation and for being such strong partners, and I urge Governor Newsom to sign them once they arrive on his desk. I will continue doing everything in my authority to demand the answers and accountability this community deserves."
Mayor Bass has been clear that Lineage and Chill Build do not deserve to rebuild. She has called on City lawyers to pursue litigation, a lien, and all legal options for cost recovery and penalties.
