The City of Marion is partnering with the Cedar Rapids Linn County Solid Waste Agency to provide residents with an option for recycling their household batteries free of charge.
If not disposed of properly, many batteries can spark fires or explosions. Some batteries contain hazardous chemicals that can be harmful. If landfilled, these batteries can contaminate land and waterways.
"Earlier this fall, a fire broke out on one of our garbage trucks. The fire was caused by a lithium battery that wasn't disposed of properly," said Public Works Director Mike Barkalow. "Thankfully there were no injuries, but it serves as an important reminder that batteries should never be placed in recycling bins or household trash."
Working with the Solid Waste Agency, drop-off boxes have been placed at two City facilities to encourage proper disposal:
Access the drop-off boxes during each facility's normal hours of operation. All types of batteries are accepted including alkaline, lithium & lithium-ion, coin batteries and more.
