On Tuesday, April 7, 2026 at 10:51 p.m., Portland Police Officers assigned to North Precinct and the Traffic Division responded to a report of a crash at Northeast Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and Northeast Killingsworth Street. When they arrived with emergency medical services, they found a man with serious injuries. He was transported to the hospital by ambulance and admitted, but at the time his injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
Officers investigated the crash and determined that the driver of a vehicle struck the pedestrian and did not remain. Officers investigated and documented the scene (case #26-100089). No immediate arrests were made.
On Saturday, April 18, 2026, a Portland Police Traffic Investigations Unit (TIU) supervisor was notified that the patient died that afternoon at the hospital from injuries sustained in the crash.
The pedestrian is identified as Edouard Bisimwa Kongolo, 51. Since his death, significant efforts have been made to reach his family, which is believed to be living abroad. This is the 14th traffic related fatality in the City of Portland of 2026. It is the fifth involving a pedestrian death, and the second hit-and-run case.
