Back in Washington, the GOP's approval ratings are tanking as Trump, Vance, and Republicans refuse to end the government shutdown and stop health insurance premiums from doubling for over 200,000 Indiana families. Instead of doing his job, JD Vance will travel to Indiana tomorrow in an attempt to rig the Congressional maps in Republicans' favor. He'll try to strong-arm state lawmakers to make changes to their congressional map, despite widespread opposition from Indiana lawmakers from both sides of the aisle and from Indiana voters.
A reminder: Donald Trump is pushing redistricting across the country because he is concerned his Big Ugly Bill is so unpopular that it will impact the 2026 midterm elections. In Indiana alone, Trump's budget kicks 290,000 families off their health insurance and puts 12 rural hospitals on the brink of closure.
Recent polling shows Americans disapprove of partisan gerrymandering by double-digit margins.
In response to Vance's trip, DNC Communications Director Rosemary Boeglin released the following statement:
"Instead of negotiating to end the government shutdown and stop health care premiums from doubling for hundreds of thousands of Hoosiers, Donald Trump is sending JD Vance to Indiana to try to strong-arm Indiana Republicans into rigging their congressional map, despite widespread opposition. Trump and Vance are desperate for this gerrymander to succeed because they are scared that Republicans are about to lose their majority in the 2026 midterms. In Indiana, Trump's Big Ugly Bill causes 290,000 Indiana families to lose their health insurance and puts 12 rural hospitals on the brink of closure. The DNC stands ready to defend democracy in Indiana and across the country."
