German Didactics to go: Explanatory Videos for Prospective Teachers

10/08/2025

There are now explanatory videos on literary learning in German lessons for student teachers: freely accessible, practical and ideal for the entire degree programme. They were developed at the University of Würzburg.

Literary learning: This refers to the acquisition of skills in dealing with literature - in particular the ability to understand, interpret, reflect on and aesthetically experience novels, poems and other literary texts. German didactics expert Kaspar Spinner has presented a particularly relevant concept for literary learning.

How does literary learning succeed in German lessons? What skills should pupils acquire?

Answers are provided by the learning materials developed in the project "German didactics to go - basics for your studies" at the University of Würzburg.

Useful in All Phases of the Degree Programme

The result is twelve high-quality explanatory videos that present key aspects of literary learning according to Spinner. The videos are aimed at student teachers of all school types who will later teach German. They are useful in all phases of their studies: from the introductory course to internship support and exam preparation.

The videos are supplemented by flashcards, bibliographical references for in-depth study and minimised versions for low-barrier access.

Project Closes a Gap in the Curriculum

"Explanatory videos are among the most popular digital learning resources for young adults," says project manager Dr Christine Ott from the Chair of the Didactics of the German Language and Literature at the University of Würzburg. However, high-quality and at the same time appealing explanatory videos on German didactic learning content have been lacking until now. The project has made a start here.

A particular advantage: the materials are permanently and freely accessible as Open Educational Resources (OER) at the Virtual University of Bavaria. Student teachers from all over Germany can view, download and edit them at any time - in the spirit of modern, flexible university teaching.

The video series is available under the CC-BY-NC licence and can be accessed here: https://doi.org/10.71641/dd2go_01

Suitable for the Further Training of Teachers

The videos have also attracted attention beyond the academic world: The Bavarian State Institute for School Quality and Educational Research has included the materials in its further training platform for teachers(#lesen.bayern) - a sign of the high didactic quality and practical relevance.

"Deutschdidaktik to go" was created as part of WueDive, a project at the University of Würzburg for the further development of digital teaching. The cooperation partner and publisher of the learning materials is the Centre for Academic Education and Teaching (ZBL) at the University of Würzburg.

Project Management Welcomes Feedback

"We wish all teaching staff and students lots of fun and success with the videos," says Christine Ott. The project manager and the WueDive team welcome feedback, [email protected]
