Water Quality Grant Proposals Now Accepted

NASHVILLE -The Tennessee Department of Agriculture (TDA) is accepting proposals for projects to address nonpoint source pollution (NPS) and improve or protect water quality across Tennessee. The deadline to submit proposals is Dec. 1, 2026.

Funding is available through the Tennessee Nonpoint Source Program and is supported by a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency under Section 319(h) of the Clean Water Act.

"Water quality challenges vary from one watershed to another, and local projects can address those challenges where they occur," Agriculture Commissioner Andy Holt said. "This funding gives communities and organizations an opportunity to put practical solutions to work in their watersheds."

Eligible applicants include local governments, interstate agencies, nonprofit organizations and institutions, colleges and universities, and state government agencies.

The highest priority will be given to projects targeting waters identified as impaired by NPS on Tennessee's most recent list of impaired waters. Projects should identify specific sources of pollution and work to address them. Preference is given to projects targeting small, simple watersheds where measurable water quality improvements are most likely.

Watershed restoration projects must be based on an approved watershed-based plan. The second funding priority is projects that protect high-quality surface water designations. Such projects require a watershed-based plan. The third priority is projects focused on education and training to raise public awareness of practical steps to eliminate NPS.

The program typically provides up to 60% of total project costs, with the remaining 40% provided through matching funds. Proposals should be planned for a three-year project period.
