DLA Distribution Sigonella staff ride highlights support to U.S. Space Force missile warning mission

NAVAL AIR STATION SIGONELLA, Italy -

Defense Logistics Agency Distribution Sigonella, Italy, executed a staff ride as part of its deliberate workforce development campaign, this time visiting U.S. Space Force 5th Space Warning Squadron Detachment 1 onboard Naval Air Station Sigonella.

The staff ride continued an initiative led by Navy Cmdr. Aaron K. Smith, commander, DLA Distribution Sigonella, Italy, to connect the supply chain directly to the warfighter's mission. The effort builds on a series of immersive engagements designed to strengthen professional development for DLA Distribution Sigonella's military and civilian workforce by increasing understanding of supported units and their operational requirements.

The 5th Space Warning Squadron Detachment 1 was activated onboard Naval Air Station Sigonella Oct. 30, 2023. The detachment's mission is to provide battlespace characterization in theater missile warning through a Joint Tactical Ground Station, or JTAGS, capability.

DLA Distribution Sigonella works closely with the U.S. Space Force detachment to provide a variety of logistics services, including central receiving, direct turnover, transshipments, inventory support, hazardous material support during emergent hours, and around-the-clock bearer pickup support. These capabilities help ensure the detachment receives the critical material and sustainment support required to maintain mission readiness.

For DLA Distribution Sigonella personnel, the visit reinforced how logistics readiness underpins missions far beyond traditional supply support. NAS Sigonella's strategic location enables U.S., allied, and partner nation forces to deploy and respond as required, helping ensure security and stability across Europe, Africa, and the Central Command area of responsibility.

"I'm glad we have such dedicated Guardians helping to provide our theater commanders with accurate and timely data to ensure our team has the best sight picture and ultimately keep our warfighters as safe as possible," said Mike Kickerson, assistant operations manager, DLA Distribution Sigonella.
