Frostburg State University Jazz Orchestra Presents An Evening of Jazz

The Frostburg State University Department of Music invites the campus and community to enjoy An Evening of Jazz, featuring the FSU Jazz Orchestra and special guest artist Joey Orr '24, an accomplished alumnus and rising professional trumpeter.

Presented by the FSU Department of Music, Theatre and Dance, the concert will be held on Friday, Oct. 30, at 7:30 p.m. in the Pealer Recital Hall at FSU's Woodward D. Pealer Performing Arts Center.

Ticket prices are adults $20 cash/$21.09 credit/debit card; seniors, military, youth or with an FSU ID: $10 cash/$10.69 credit/debit card; and free for children 12 and under. The concert will showcase an exciting and diverse program. Featured works include Sammy Nestico's swinging big band classics "Dimensions in Blue" and "Queen Bee," Stevie Wonder's funk-infused hit "Higher Ground," Sonny Rollins' beloved jazz standard "St. Thomas," video game theme "Bob-Omb Battlefield" Super Mario 64 as arranged by the 8-bit Big Band, and the iconic "Game of Thrones Theme," arranged for jazz orchestra by acclaimed arranger Callum Au, and more! The evening will also feature outstanding soloists from the ensemble, including Orr as featured guest artist.

A graduate of FSU's Class of 2024, Orr distinguished himself during his time at Frostburg as an exceptional jazz performer and versatile musician. Orr returns to perform with the ensemble that helped launch his musical career.

The program offers audiences a journey through multiple generations and styles of jazz, from the sophisticated big band writing of Nestico to the Caribbean-inspired rhythms of Rollins' St. Thomas and the contemporary energy of Wonder's Higher Ground. The inclusion of Au's jazz orchestration of the Game of Thrones theme adds a modern cinematic flair to the evening.
