On April 29th, Ambassador Wang Xiaolong, accompanied by Consul General He Ying, led a delegation to visit the Chatham Islands, where they held discussions with Mayor Greg Horler, Hamish Chisholm, Chair of the Chatham Islands Enterprise Trust representatives of the Council, and leaders of the local Moriori community. Sir David Carter, former Speaker of the New Zealand Parliament and National Patron of the New Zealand China Friendship Society, along with Brett O'Riley, Acting President of the Friendship society also joined the visit.
Ambassador Wang noted that China-New Zealand relations continue to maintain sound momentum, with close economic and people-to-people exchanges. He highlighted the rich resources and strong development potential on Chatham Islands, and expressed China's willingness to enhance engagement and expand practical cooperation in areas such as fisheries and renewable energy.
Mayor Horler warmly welcomed the delegation, introduced the local industrial development and the challenges they face, and expressed his hope to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with China to inject new momentum into local development.
During the visit, Ambassador Wang and Consul General He also visited Chatham Island Food Co, Durham wind farm, and Taiko Trust.
