Commonwealth University-Mansfield students recently had the opportunity to engage with several criminal justice professionals in class during career-focused employer presentations.

Dr. Justin Crowl, associate professor of criminal justice, hosted representatives from the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Pennsylvania State Police and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in several classes, in partnership with the Office of Alumni and Professional Engagement.

The visiting professionals included Tpr. Jessica Naschke, recruiter for the Pennsylvania State Police, Central Recruitment Unit Troop F; Kristen Wright-Weaver, recruitment specialist for the Federal Bureau of Prisons; and Jolene Bell, recruiter and human resource analyst 2 for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Each speaker discussed career opportunities within their agencies, hiring expectations, professional experiences and advice for students preparing to enter the workforce.

Students had the opportunity to ask questions about careers, the application process, academy training, internships, workplace expectations, advancement opportunities and the realities of working in these types of professions. The presenters also emphasized the growing need for qualified applicants across a variety of public service careers.

Dr. Tiffany Welch brought students from her social work class to join, highlighting the interdisciplinary relevance of careers in corrections, law enforcement, human services and government.

Crowl noted that providing students with direct access to employers is a key part of preparing them for professional careers after graduation. "Employers are looking to hire our students. These types of opportunities allow students to network, ask questions and gain an understanding of what employers are looking for in today's workforce," he said.

Graham Zechman and Nichole Lefelhoc from the Office of Alumni and Professional Engagement helped with coordination of the event and to connect students with employers.
