MoDOT: Move Over, Slow Down to Give First Responders the Space They Need

JEFFERSON CITY - Missouri joins transportation and emergency response agencies nationwide in honoring the state's first responders during National Crash Responder Safety Week, which runs Nov. 2-6. This week recognizes the dedicated men and women who often work just feet from moving traffic, reminding travelers that moving over and slowing down can save lives.

Missourians rely on the approximately 23,000 trained responders to assist with thousands of roadway emergencies each month. In 2025, Missouri emergency responders handled more than 133,000 crashes. And according to the Federal Highway Administration, traffic incidents remain a leading cause of death for emergency responders nationwide.

"Every time a responder steps out onto the roadway, they are putting their safety in the hands of passing motorists," said MoDOT Chief Safety and Operations Officer Becky Allmeroth. "These are people working to help someone in need, clear a crash or restore traffic flow, and they deserve to return home safely at the end of their shift. We ask every Missouri driver to do their part by paying attention, slowing down and moving over when approaching emergency vehicles. A few seconds of caution can make a life-saving difference."

Missouri's Move Over law requires drivers approaching stationary emergency and other qualifying vehicles displaying warning lights to change lanes when safe to do so or slow down when changing lanes is not possible. This can include moving over or slowing down for law enforcement officers, tow truck operators, emergency medical personnel, firefighters and Missouri Department of Transportation crews.

Crash Responder Safety Week serves as a reminder that protecting those who protect us is a shared responsibility. Motorists are encouraged to remain alert, avoid distractions and give responders the space they need to work safely.
