Preparedness Starts at Home: September is National Preparedness Month

Fall officially begins on September 22, but you don't have to wait for a change in seasons to prepare for an emergency. Emergencies can unexpectedly impact us in many ways, large and small, for a few minutes or a few weeks. September is an ideal month to begin or review preparations for responding to and recovering from emergencies and natural disasters. In fact, not all emergencies are weather-related.

The City of Hillsboro's Fire & Rescue Department and the City of Hillsboro Emergency Management encourage all community members to take steps to prepare. Preparedness starts at home, and there are four key areas:

1. Know Your Risk

You can start by visiting our website to learn about the types of hazards that could affect our area, like earthquakes, floods, and winter storms. You can also learn about how different City departments are prepared to respond.

2. Make a Family Emergency Plan

Help ensure that your entire family is informed and prepared in the event of an emergency or disaster. You may not all be together when the event occurs, so make plans to ensure you can contact and find one another. Find tips and learn how to make your plan.

3. Build an Emergency Supply Kit

In a significant event, emergency responders, such as police, firefighters, and rescuers, may be called in many directions and may be delayed in reaching you. Being prepared means being equipped with the proper supplies you may need, kept in an easy-to-carry emergency preparedness kit that you can use at home or take with you in case you must evacuate. Start here.

4. Get Involved in Your Community

Get to know your neighbors, local resources, and community groups. Take online training courses to expand your knowledge or sign up to be part of Hillsboro's Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). Have experience with amateur radio? Use your license to help your community. Learn more about all of these options.

Follow Hillsboro Fire & Rescue on Facebook and Nextdoor as we share more tips and information throughout the month to help you stay prepared.
