The City Council on Tuesday, May 26 will recognize outstanding Marines, raise awareness of drowning prevention and consider a pool rehabilitation project, among other business.
The business portion of the meeting begins at 6 pm in the Council Chamber at 200 Civic Center.
During the presentation portion of the meeting, Council Members will recognize Marines from the City's adopted Headquarters Battalion of the First Marine Division at Camp Pendleton and present certificates of commendation to the "Marine of the Quarter" Lance Corporal Nathaniel F. J. Snader and "Non-Commissioned Officer of the Quarter" Sergeant Hector Solis.
The Council will also proclaim this time of year as Drowning Prevention and Awareness Season. With the importance of raising drowning prevention awareness year-round and particularly during warmer months, representatives from the Orange County Fire Authority will discuss this critical topic. The need is certainly there - as drowning remains a leading cause of injury-related deaths among children under five in California.
In other news, Council Members will consider awarding an agreement for a Sierra Recreation Center pool rehabilitation project. The work would include new pool replastering and the replacement of all pool mechanical equipment.
In December 2023, the City was awarded a $2 million CAL FIRE State Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund grant for the Mission Viejo Fuel Reduction Project. The project has progressed quickly and is nearing completion, so the Council will consider appropriating the remaining grant funds.
As is standard practice in approaching the midpoint of the City's two-year Budget, the Council will consider potential revisions and appropriations.
Council meetings are streamed live on the City's website and air on Cox Channel 30 and AT&T U-Verse Channel 99. Residents are encouraged to sign up for the City's eNewsletter and follow the City's official social media sites for the most accurate, up-to-date information.
