BLM issues final analysis for proposed oil and gas management updates in south-central California

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -The Bureau of Land Management issued the final supplemental environmental impact statement analyzing updated and new information for oil and gas leasing and development on public lands in portions of Fresno, Kern, Kings, Madera, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Tulare, and Ventura counties.

The effort aligns with Secretary's Order 3418, which supports President Trump's call for "Unleashing American Energy," aimed at increasing energy exploration and production on federal lands in an affordable and reliable manner. The order emphasizes development of oil, gas, coal, strategic minerals, and alternative energy sources on public lands.

The BLM Bakersfield Field Office manages approximately 400,000 acres of public land and 1.2 million acres of federal mineral estate in central California and supports about 3,500 jobs and over $200 million in economic activity annually. The agency collects a 12.5% royalty on existing oil and gas leases for all production from federal minerals, generating about $65-90 million each year. Roughly half of this revenue is returned to the state of California, with the remainder deposited in the U.S. Treasury.
