Matthew Doumit joins Washington Forest Protection Association policy team

OLYMPIA, Wash. - The Washington Forest Protection Association (WFPA), Washington state's leading trade organization representing the sustainable forestry sector, announced today that Matt Doumit will join its policy team.

Doumit will serve as a policy associate and focus much of his efforts on forest policy, taxation, and industry relations.

"We couldn't be more pleased to have Matt join the WFPA team," said Jason Spadaro, WFPA executive director. "Matt's deep rural Washington roots, in combination with his work in natural resources, will further help WFPA articulate to state, county, and regional decision makers the undeniable and critical role Washington's working forests play in providing critical carbon friendly building products and boosting our state's economy with green jobs, innovation, climate change mitigation, wildlife habitats, and enhancing our quality of life."

Doumit, the son of former state legislator and WFPA executive director Mark Doumit, comes to WFPA with extensive experience in natural resources management legislative process and policymaking. Most recently, Doumit served as a state legislative and policy analyst with the Association of Washington Cities (AWC). Before his time with AWC, he worked as a government relations consultant at lobbying firm Gordon Thomas Honeywell Governmental Relations, served as a House Democratic Caucus legislative analyst for rural economic and community development, spent time as a law clerk in the state's Attorney General's Office Natural Resources Division, and worked as nonpartisan staff for the Oregon State Legislature.

Doumit, a Society of American Foresters member since 2008, also has a strong forestry background with experience at timberland and forest products companies in Longview and Tumwater as a timber cruiser, operations forester, and forest roads forester. He grew up working in his family's natural resources businesses like commercial fishing and a family tree farm.

"Being born and raised in rural Washington has given me a genuine appreciation for working forests and the communities that depend on them. Working forests are critical for sustainable natural resources management, salmon recovery, and helping Washington state meet its climate goals," said Doumit. "I am excited to work with legislators, agencies, and policy makers to share the story of Washington's working forests and apply my state and local government experience to champion meaningful forestry policies that benefit all of Washington."

Doumit begins his work at WFPA on September 24th.
