LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) is announcing two periods of construction work requiring lane restrictions and closures along two blocks of Sepulveda Boulevard near Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The work, which begins in July, is in support of the Airfield and Terminal Modernization Program (ATMP) Roadway Improvements Project and allows crews to advance to the next stage of construction on a new pedestrian bridge. When completed, the bridge will span Sepulveda Boulevard at its intersection with Century Boulevard and improve pedestrian safety and traffic flow.

"These temporary road closures on Sepulveda Boulevard will help us deliver a new pedestrian bridge that provides access to LAX while reducing vehicle traffic congestion and increasing pedestrian safety," said Mike Christensen, Chief Airports Development Officer, LAWA. "The ATMP Roadway Improvements project is one of the most ambitious transportation projects in our city, and we are committed to keeping the public updated with advance notice, regular communication and new resources ahead of major construction work to help motorists plan their journeys to, from, around, and through LAX."

The first major work period will take place Monday, July 13 through Friday, July 17, 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., and will consist of intermittent nightly traffic breaks of southbound Sepulveda Boulevard during the weekday nights with up to all four southbound lanes closed between 12 a.m. and 4 a.m. Traffic may be completely stopped for approximately 20 minutes while beams are installed for the falsework of the new bridge. Please anticipate delays and allow for additional travel time.

The second work period, beginning Saturday, July 18 at 1 a.m., will consist of a full directional closure of northbound Sepulveda between Century Boulevard and 98th Street. Work is scheduled to conclude by Sunday, July 19 at 4:30 a.m.

Both periods have been scheduled to begin after the final Los Angeles-area FIFA World Cup quarterfinal game, which will take place on Friday, July 10 at noon at SoFi Stadium. Motorists are advised to plan with extra time in mind ahead of construction activities. LAX guests are also advised to plan ahead of the normal suggested arrival times for their flights, which is two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international flights.

For the northbound closure, Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) traffic officers will be deployed at key intersections along the designated detour routes, in addition to flaggers to ease traffic flow. Los Angeles Airport Police sworn and traffic officers will continue routine patrols across LAX and surrounding areas.

LAWA is also debuting a new website for ATMP Roadway Improvements-related roadway construction activities, located at https://www.lawa.org/transforminglax/projects/atmp-roadways/roadway-impacts. It includes descriptions of work, maps of work areas with delineated detour routes, and links to additional project resources.

Though LAWA already communicates this information through existing communications channels, including traditional media engagement, mailing lists, and social media, this is the first website to consolidate information about intermittent closures associated with a single project. Officials are planning 31 more periods of intermittent closures as part of the ATMP Roadway Improvements project between now and its conclusion in 2030.

The new website complements existing resources for information that guests and the public can use to ease their LAX-area travel. In addition to the LAWA Construction Advisories website, which details additional construction and traffic impacts associated with all capital improvement projects and other work, LAWA offers these LAX traffic and information resources:

  • Live LAX Traffic - Features an up-to-date map of roadways within the CTA and adjacent areas highlighting congestion levels, as well as projected drive times from prominent area intersections and freeways.
  • LAX 24-Hour Construction Hotline - A resource for asking questions about construction at LAX, accessible via phone, email, or a web form.
  • Social Media - Information regarding substantial construction or traffic activity will be shared via LAX social media accounts.

The ATMP Roadway Project will reconfigure 4.4 miles of roads to separate airport-bound traffic from neighborhood traffic, reduce congestion, and improve vehicle and pedestrian access to LAX's Central Terminal Area (CTA) and surrounding neighborhoods. These include elevated ingress and egress roadway systems that will provide streamlined routes and enhanced safety for vehicle traffic local to LAX. LAWA anticipates completion of ingress roadways ahead of the 2028 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games, with full completion of egress roadways expected by 2030. More information about the ATMP Roadway Improvements project can be found at www.lawa.org/transforminglax/projects/atmp-roadways.
