WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, released a statement after President Trump signed into law several Cassidy-led provisions to lower prescription drug prices and rein in health care middlemen profiting off American families. These provisions were part of the remaining appropriations bills to end the partial government shutdown.
"President Trump and I agree: these programs should be about lowering the cost for patients, not about increasing profit for shareholders," said Dr. Cassidy.
Specifically, the package corrects misaligned incentives that Pharmacy Benefit Managers use to raise drug costs for patients. The law ensures drug discounts are passed on to group health plan sponsors, lowering costs for patients. The package also includes the Give Kids a Chance Act, led by Cassidy and U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-OK), which increases access to lifesaving treatments for children with cancer.
Cassidy's PBM reform provisions are supported by a broad coalition of pro-worker, pro-patient organizations, including the America First Policy Institute, the National Community Pharmacists Association, The ERISA Industry Committee, Partnership for Employer-Sponsored Coverage, Purchaser Business Group on Health, National Alliance of Healthcare Purchaser Coalitions, Silicon Valley Employers Forum, and the CHRO Association.
