(Hartford, CT) - Attorney General William Tong today announced a settlement with RZ Smoke, Inc., over allegations that the company illegally distributed and sold high potency cannabis products to smokes shops, gas stations, and convenience stores across Connecticut without a license from the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection (DCP).
The Defendants have agreed to a stipulated judgement of $2 million, with $375,000 paid to the State and $1.6 million suspended to ensure compliance with Connecticut law. The Defendants are prohibited from manufacturing, packaging, selling, offering for sale, distributing, and storing intoxicating THC products in Connecticut unless licensed by DCP to do so.
"Connecticut has strict cannabis licensing and safety standards to protect consumers from dangerous, untested, and illegal products. Some of these highly potent products are packaged to look like candy or snacks, deliberately designed to appeal to children. We will not hesitate to hold accountable any businesses skirting our laws and putting profits ahead of public safety," said Attorney General Tong.
In May 2023, DCP Drug Control agents and Suffield police searched a warehouse in Suffield associated with the wholesale company and discovered 11 pallets of cannabis products with an estimated retail value of $792,000.
In January 2024, The Office of the Attorney General filed an enforcement action against RZ Smoke for violating Connecticut's Unfair Trade Practices Act (CUPTA). Individuals age 21 and over can legally possess and consume cannabis in Connecticut. Cannabis products may only be sold in the regulated market and must meet rigorous testing and packaging requirements. Cannabis products sold outside of the regulated market continue to be illegal and may subject sellers to civil and criminal penalties.
Assistant Attorneys General Katherine Hagmann-Borenstein, Jonathan Blake, Allison Frisbee, Addison Keilty, Michael Nunes, and Paralegal Specialist Dominica Zdonek assisted the Attorney General in this matter.
