U.S. Rep. Kelly Morrison Joins House Steering and Policy Hearing on Republicans’ Cuts to Health Care and SNAP

WASHINGTON, DC - On Thursday, U.S. Representative Kelly Morrison (MN-03) joined the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee for a hearing on the harmful impact of the Trump Administration and Republican majority's decisions to cut food assistance, make health care unaffordable, and keep the House out of session for nearly seven weeks straight.
Representative Morrison and the Steering and Policy Committee heard testimony from Americans across the country - from mothers whose health care is only affordable because of the ACA credits Republicans refuse to renew, to community health workers who help ensure families can get enough to eat through benefits like SNAP and WIC.
Earlier this year, President Trump and Congressional Republicans made the single largest cuts to health care and SNAP in our nation's history in their cruelly-named "One Big Beautiful Bill Act." Now, Republicans are refusing to end the shutdown and protect health care access for millions of people, and the Trump Administration continues to threaten food assistance for 42 million Americans.

Thank you for being here and speaking to just how dire the circumstances of the Republican Shutdown are.
It's the 37th day of Republicans holding the government hostage and refusing to hear the overwhelming majority of Americans asking them to protect their care.
I have the honor of representing the people of Minnesota's third district and as we dive deeper into how these crises are compounding to harm our communities, we can draw no other conclusion than the cruelty is the point.
We've now seen Trump and Congressional Republicans go beyond ignoring patients, advocates, experts, physicians, and caregivers to the President threatening access to food for millions of Americans.
Children, seniors, and veterans going hungry while House Republicans enjoy their 7th week off.
The American people have been abundantly clear. They want their representatives to address the rising cost of health care, stop grocery prices from increasing, and deliver stability and affordability.
But Congressional Republicans and the Trump Administration have refused to show up to address these crises.
In fact, earlier this year they united to implement a direct contradiction of what the American people asked of them.
Their most significant accomplishment thus far was to make the single greatest cut to health care and to food assistance in our nation's history.
They've tried multiple excuses, rebrands, and smokescreens in a desperate attempt to conceal the reality of their "One Big, Beautiful Bill".
Now they are once again uniting to undermine affordability by refusing to extend ACA tax credits that help families, small business owners, farmers, and caregivers afford their health care.
In brief, Trump is threatening to withhold SNAP funds in order to skyrocket premiums for American families just a couple months after his signature bill cut billions from Medicaid and SNAP.
It is beyond cruel and an outright betrayal of the American people.
As an OB-GYN physician myself, who had the privilege of caring for patients for more than 20 years, I find these combined attacks on health care and food access that will have severe consequences for the long-term health of the most vulnerable Americans absolutely horrifying.

Questions for Ashley Gooden-Stewart
  1. Mrs. Gooden-Stuart , can you elaborate on the changes you have seen in the day-to-day realities of families in your community since Trump and Congressional Republicans' cuts to health care and food assistance?
  2. In your experience, what are the long-term community impacts when children grow up without access to the food and health care they need?
